As part of the BLUE CONNECT project, we are interested in collating and analysing photos of marine mammals taken around Shetland for a number of reasons, including to contribute to photo-identification projects, and to look at scarring to understand past entanglements and interactions.
We are interested in photographs of all marine mammal species, and depending on what you see, we might also direct you to submit them to other appropriate places (e.g. humpback whale or killer whale catalogues). If you do capture any images or videos of marine mammals around Shetland, please consider contributing them, by emailing shetlandmarinemammals@outlook.com
Many marine mammals can be identified by their unique dorsal fin shape, markings and scarring - this means we can often recognise when the same individuals return to Shetland! There are a number of catalogues to help identify marine mammals that frequent Shetland waters, including for killer whales, Risso's dolphins and humpback whales. There may also be the possibility to ID other individuals, like harbour porpoise or minke whales, should we build up a big enough repository of good quality photos taken around Shetland, so please don't hesitate to submit any imagery you have, of any species, to shetlandmarinemammals@outlook.com
Here is a link to the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust’s Minke Whale Photo ID catalogue that spans 30 years. Being a highly mobile species, maybe some of whales seen on the west coast of Scotland are seen in Shetland too? Send in your photographs to the Whale Track app and/or to shetlandmarinemammals@outlook.com to see if we can find a match, and help better understand the movements of this species!
